Literary Salon for Young Children / Väikelaste Kirjandussalong

I am running a literary salon for young children in Tartu this year. It means I read good children's literature, fairy-tales and poems in Estonian to children from ages 1,5 - 7 (there are no strict age limits). We also do some colouring in, admire illustrations and eat things . . . There are reading sessions 3-4 times a week, 2 hours at a time. If you are in Tartu and might be interested in sending your child to join us to improve their Estonian language, fall in love with stories and make new friends, please contact me: or (if you understand Estonian) look for a f acebook group called "Väikelaste kirjandussalong".
I am also open to the idea of doing some reading sessions in English if your child speaks no Estonian.
The salon is home-based, informal, friendly and chaotic. The emphasis is on quality of the reading material and the illustrations. My own tastes and childhood nostalgia play a role. The salon aims to give children something they take with them as they grow up - a sense of familiarity with the world in a way that you can only find through stories.
I don't believe in too much moralising - children are intelligent and should not be underestimated. They have the right to make up their own minds, while being given hints of all the different directions where their cultural roots reach and their imaginations can go.
In the words of Maurice Sendak:
"Certainly we want to protect our children from new and painful experiences that are beyond their emotional comprehension and that intensify anxiety; and to a point we can prevent premature exposure to such experiences. That is obvious. But what is just as obvious — and what is too often overlooked — is the fact that from their earliest years children live on familiar terms with disrupting emotions, fear and anxiety are an intrinsic part of their everyday lives, they continually cope with frustrations as best they can. And it is through fantasy that children achieve catharsis. It is the best means they have for taming Wild Things."

Salong on avatud 3-4 korda nädalas, iga seanss kestab kaks tundi. Kel huvi rohkem teada saada, võtke julgesti ühendust: või liituge facebookis grupiga "Väikelaste kirjandussalong" kust leiab täpsemat infot ja jooksvat arutamist.
